on to the other concerns:
i made use of 3 pcs tsuba & made the middle one a bit loose just enough to rotate it. the upper & lower tsuba are fixed. that's basically how it's done...
the rotating middle part is just a little bit loose so the paint won't get scratched due to the revolving parts. But idealy, a pin lock should be provided there. a metal strip just as thin as a toothpick to secure the 3pcs in place.
for the other technique you were suggesting, i think that'll work good too, but just as you stated, it'll be trouble for the sword wielder to be taking it off & back on from time to time.
either way, as long as the general look of the sword doesn't suffer, it'll all be good then!
